The Newest Far Cry 5 Cinematic Trailer Brings Montana Into Focus

A lot of love went into recreating Montana for Far Cry 5, and the results speak for themselves

Ubisoft created a buzz when it revealed that the Far Cry series, known for its exotic settings, would take place in a fictional version of Montana for its upcoming installment. Now a new trailer gives us a closer look at how the development team recreated Montana with as much realism as the local doomsday cult that will serve as the antagonists.
One way the development team accomplished this realism was by using a technique called photogrammetry to recreate the flora and geological objects that make up Montana’s diverse biospheres. Photogrammetry is the process of taking multiple photographs around an object and then taking all that photographic data and turning it into a 3D object.
Photogrammetry is the same process that DICE used to recreate Star Wars Battlefront‘s landscapes and character models, and Far Cry 5‘s developers are using it two years later to a stunning effect. Showing off captured in-game footage, it’s difficult to tell where real Montana ends and Far Cry 5‘s version of Montana begins.
Traveling to and researching Montana’s culture and lifestyle also made a significant impact not only on Far Cry 5‘s map but on one of its newest and most interesting gameplay mechanics: fishing.
“Fishing was quite present there and we said we should absolutely try to instill that in the game,” narrative director Jean-Sebastien Decant says in the trailer. “Even if it’s not a priority, we should have it. It feels like it belongs in that space.”
In fact, the fishing ended up having so much depth, including different kinds of lures and rods, that Ubisoft hosted a Far Cry 5 fishing tournament at the most recent PAX West.
All in all, with its diverse terrain and wildlife, Montana seems to be the perfect setting for a Far Cry game. If you’re still not convinced, check out the trailer below.
Far Cry 5 is launching for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC on February 27th.
