Play Skyrim Special Edition For Free This Weekend On Xbox One And PC

Now's your chance to get your hands on the open-world RPG for free

Elder Scrolls: Skyrim

If you haven’t yet gotten your hands on the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim or one of its many iterations, then, frankly, you’re missing out. But more importantly, you’ll be able to play the Special Edition for free this weekend.
Skyrim‘s Special Edition will be free for Xbox One Gold Members and Steam users this coming weekend, from 12:01 a.m. PT on Thursday, September 7th, all the way through to midnight on Sunday, September 10th.Should you choose to buy after testing the game, Skyrim Special Edition will be 50 percent off in the Xbox Store--Skyrim: Special Edition is on sale in both Steam and the Xbox Store for $20 and $30, respectively. The sale ends on September 18 for Xbox and September 19 for Steam; those who pick the game up after sampling it can carry their progress over from the free trial.

The Special Edition of the game comes with enhanced graphics and all three DLC packs, so that makes this weekend a great time to play if you bought the base game but never delved into any of the DLC—or if you just want to see Skyrim looking a little prettier.

Skyrim originally released for PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 back in 2011. The remastered Special Edition arrived on PS4, Xbox One, and PC last October and features improved visuals and all of the game's DLC expansions. A Nintendo Switch version is on the way later this year and will feature Amiibo support in the form of unlockable Legend of Zelda items. We got to see a lot of the Switch version at PAX West. A VR version of Skyrim will also release on November 17.
