The studio that created Destiny and Halo wants to branch out with a new series.
Despite the fact that Destiny 2 only recently launched on consoles and is still about to launch on PC, developer Bungie is apparently already thinking ahead to a future beyond Destiny.
In a recent interview with the BBC, Bungie discussed the process of moving the current sci-fi shooter to the PC platform, and more importantly, gave fans a tease that they’re already looking at what game they might make next. The developer’s co-founder Jason Jones stated: “We’re starting in a small way to look at what’s beyond Destiny.”
With two successful sci-fi shooter series to define their brand, Bungie could continue with the genre that put them on the map, but it seems there could be a pivot to a new genre. “Every time you do a new thing to surprise and delight people you risk being ignored,” Jones said. It’s unclear if the “new thing” Jones mentions means a different sci-fi game, or if Bungie might step into an entirely different genre. Destiny has role-playing elements within the heart of the gameplay, so maybe a fresh take on the turn-based RPG could be an interesting move from the company.
Jones only teases the concept of new material, but Bungie still has another new venture to focus on before a new franchise can be considered. Destiny 2‘s lead PC developer David Shaw gave an update on the biggest challenge moving the console-based game to PC:
Making the mouse and keyboard really feel like Destiny has been one of the challenges. On consoles when you’re firing certain weapons they’ll kick and rise up quickly. That recoil is an integral part of making that experience feel good and heavy like you’re there. But on keyboard and mouse it meant you were just chasing the barrel of the gun the whole time, just dragging the mouse.
Players will get the chance to experience the new platform for the shooter once it launches on October 24th. While Destiny 2 received more favorable reviews than the first game, Bungie has been transparent that they understand players expect more from the team this time around. In turn, there’s been a steady stream of new content for Guardians to take on, including harder difficulty levels of the Leviathan raid and Nightfall Strike, the Faction Rally even, and the limited-time Crucible event Iron Banner.
